Interview with a LCBO Manager
September 14, 2000
Q- Are there different store classifications for LCBO stores?
A- Yes, on a
descending scale, from AAA stores to D stores.
AA A stores the highest sales, volume to
D stores such as
combination trailer stores.
Q- Store allotment of hours, are they dictated by the store
classification?
A-
Yes and no. Obviously higher volume store use more hours
than
lower volume stores. All
hours forecast are based on 7.7% of
each stores yearly sales.
Q- Is the Salary structure dictated by store classification as
well?
A- Yes.
Q- What would the salary ranges be approximately?
A- An A store manager makes
roughly 55 to 60 thousand a year.
An example of an A store would be a store
in Kitchener or
Waterloo.
Q- How many hours are managers expected to work in any
given
week?
A- Most managers work 40
hours a week. There are times when they
put in some extra.
Q- Are LCBO Managers unionized?
A- Yes and no. A store
managers and up are not, B store managers
and down are!!!!!!
Q- Do you receive overtime for hours worked over 40 hours a week?
A- B store managers
and down do and the A store managers do not,
which is why they don’t work over
40 hours a week.
Q- Are managers hours counted as productive time?
A- Yes, but there ongoing
discussions and debates on this issue at the
present time.
Q- How many full time personnel would be in any given store.
A- For an example, Elmira
or New Hamburg , a C store classification
would have a manager and one full time
employee. The rest of
the staff would be temps.
Q- What can
you tell me about your holiday structure?
A- A twenty five year
employee receives 6 weeks for holidays with
the entitlement to carry over into the
next year as long as at end
of each year then is no more than 6 weeks
remaining.
Q- Do you get sick days on a yearly basis?
A- Yes, 15 sick days
per year.
Q- Do you accumulate these sick days if not used or are you paid
for
them?
A- Sick days do accumulate
if not used. If an employee should have
poor health down the road, they can draw
from their sick bank. All
remaining days left at retirement are
void, but for every year
worked up until retirement is rewarded
with a week’s pay.
Example: 30 years service-30 weeks extra
pay.
Q- In regard to Appraisals of Managers, what are they based on?
A- Meeting sales forecasts,
keeping hours forecast and adhering to
policies set out.
Q- What about stock outs, mystery shoppers, minor challenges?
A- No, nothing else but in
regards to mystery shoppers, we have
around 6 shoppers per year, but we never
hear back from them
unless there is a consistent problem area
over several visits and
then and only then will we be called and
asked to correct the
problem.
Q- How often do you have manager’s meetings?
A- About six times a year
and they are usually two day meetings.
Q- Do you have a lot
of input into these meetings?
A- Yes, there was a time
when we didn't have a lot of input , but that
was before the Andy Brandt
Administration. He is about to enter
his fourth term which is viewed by all as
a very good thing.
Q- How is the relationship between managers and the Board today?
A- Excellent. The Board,
especially being led by Andy Brandt, have
very good relations with its Employees
and have become more
focused on the human relationship factors
with it's employees.
Q- Has the LCBO ever considered MLM's for your store operations.
A- It was looked at, but
decided it wasn't the route we would be
interested in going.
Q- How many stores does your group manager control and what is
the number of his support staff?
A- We have 32 stores in our
group and our group manager has a staff
of one. A secretary to deal with Office
duties and all the paper
work.
Q- How often do you balance your stores?
A- Four times a year.
Q- What is considered an acceptable shortage at the end of a
year?
A- Shortages are usually
quite high due to customer theft…….around
the five thousand mark.
Q- How many audits does your store receive in a year?
A- One per year.
Q- How about operational audits?
A- None ……District
Manager visits the stores on occasion and does
an informal inspection.
Q- How does your Cashier accountability work?
A- All cash is counted with
the employee before and after their shifts.
If they are short, the board Picks up the
first two dollars and every
thing after that is split 50/50 with the
employee. Example, if ten
dollars short, the board picks up the two
dollars, and the
employee is liable for Half of the
remaining shortage or four
dollars.
Q- How are employees and Managers paid for Sunday shifts?
A- Union gets time and a
half and A managers and up get lieu days.
Q- Tell me about your pension .
A- We contribute to our
pensions and right now we have an eighty
factor.
Q- Approximately what percentage of your salary are you receiving
for a pension?
A- One manager who recently
retired is receiving approximately 5
thousand less than his full salary.
